Immaculate Heart College is an independent, co-educational school that commenced in 2012 and that is now offering classes from Kindergarten to Year 6. It is intended that the College will eventually progress through to Year 12, after the primary school has established itself over a number of years.
The school is located in the idyllic setting of Lower Chittering, surrounded by a peaceful and harmonious natural environment. Presently, classes are housed in both temporary buildings and in the College's Multipurpose Hall. All of the classrooms are fully equipped with new furnishings, educational resources, interactive whiteboards, computer stations, air conditioning, and many other features.
The outlook of the existing classrooms to the grassed play areas and oval, as well as to the surrounding pastures and hills is second to none! Nature-based play areas are also currently under construction, providing a new dimension to outdoor play.
Indoor sporting activities and Parent Assemblies take place in the Multipurpose Hall. The College's Canteen is open every Friday. There is also a dedicated Public Transport Authority bus service for the College, catering to students from Gingin, Bindoon, and surrounding areas. The College's own mini-bus is used for students living in Bullsbrook and surrounding areas.
Construction on the Divine Mercy Church adjacent to the school is also well underway, whilst the Parish Office and Presbytery are complete.
The College is committed to two focus areas; Academic Excellence and the Catholic Faith. At Immaculate Heart College we offer Phase 1 of the Australian Curriculum (English, Mathematics, Science, History and Geography) to all students from Pre-primary to Year 6, whilst all of the other Learning Areas are from the Western Australian Curriculum Framework. Our Kindergarten adheres to the Early Years Learning Framework.
Within the field of academia, we are focusing on improved standards in literacy and numeracy across all year levels, brought about through extensive Professional Learning opportunities for our teaching and leadership staff, as well as much investment in appropriate teaching and learning resources.
Areas of specialty include the teaching of Modern Greek (Languages Education) and one-on-one tuition in Piano (Music Lessons). The College also runs a very successful Tutorial System to help students improve academically, socially and spiritually.
Additional focus areas for 2015 include Science and Physical Education, both of which are being enhanced and promoted through the purchase of extra resources and through specialists being invited to the school to offer instruction.
The teaching of the Catholic Faith occurs both in a formal capacity on a regular basis during the week, as well as informally through integration and cross-curricula teaching and learning. It involves all members of the College community; the College Priest, the Religious Sisters, all of the staff, students, and the parent body.
The Religious Education and Virtues Programme of the College is integral to the teaching of the Catholic Faith and Christian values, as well as to the way in which behaviour is managed and restorative practice is implemented. In this regard, Immaculate Heart College is helping to shape and build a strong moral character in each of its students.
At Immaculate Heart College we are blessed with a team of very hard working and committed educators and other professionals, as well as community members. These include our College's Board of Directors and Advisory Council members, our teaching and administrative staff, and our parent body, particularly through the IHC Parents and Friends Association. The College also receives support and assistance from the local and wider community, including the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia (AISWA), of which it is a member school, and the Department of Education Services (DES).
