St Joseph’s Nudgee College, established in 1891, is a Christian Brothers school devoted to educating boys from Years 5 to 12. Located in Brisbane’s northern suburbs, the College is set on a magnificent 136 hectare property, which provides ample space for all sporting and educational pursuits. The college aims to educate the whole person in the context of the values developed by its founder Edmund Rice.
Many say the camaraderie of being a boarder at St Joseph’s Nudgee College often helps boys enjoy their schooling more, as they form life-long friendships amid study routines. With approximately 300 boys ranging from Years 6 - 12 living on campus, St Joseph’s Nudgee College is an exciting and enthusiastic community with a distinct tone and spirit emanating from the residences.
As one of Australia’s largest boarding schools, St Joseph’s Nudgee College gives students many opportunities to participate in all aspects of their development. Set in a Catholic environment, attention is also given to the spiritual growth of each boy.
Boarding accommodation is divided among four boarding houses - two for junior boarders from Years 6 - 10 and two for the Senior boarders. All houses are well supported by the Heads of Residence who care for boys for two or three years and who work hand-in-hand with House Deans from the Day School. Each residence also has a House Mother who provides gentle understanding and help with grooming and manners.
The junior boarding houses at St Joseph’s Nudgee College cater for up to 70 boys in individual style accommodation while the senior boys have individual rooms, each with their own study space and internet access, where the boys enjoy the chance to develop a more independent and mature lifestyle. With study as the main focus the building has direct access to the library and computer rooms each night of the week.
Outside school hours, boarders can make use of the various facilities at St Joseph’s Nudgee College while supervised day trips to Brisbane city, local shopping centres, sporting events and theme parks are scheduled throughout the year.
Students at St Joseph’s Nudgee College are able to enjoy the very best educational, cultural, sporting and recreational facilities available. Students have access to modern classrooms, state of the art science labs, technology and resource centre, regional Trade Training Centre on campus, NITEC (the Nudgee Information Technology Centre), manual arts block, agricultural science centre, recording studio and specially designed vocational education learning areas.
Sporting facilities at St Joseph’s Nudgee College include a nine-hole golf course, 12 tennis courts, six basketball courts (indoor and outdoor), 13 playing fields for cricket, rugby and soccer, 20 practice cricket nets, multi-purpose gymnasium and weights room, rifle range, rowing ‘shed’, Olympic 50 metre and 25 metre heated swimming pools, and an Olympic-standard athletic track.
St Joseph’s Nudgee College also has its own vineyard and cattle yards on site and backs onto the Boondall Wetlands, which provides canoe access to Moreton Bay.
As a member of the Queensland Greater Public Schools (GPS) Association, St Joseph’s Nudgee College offers its students the opportunity to compete against other schools in a range of sporting and cultural activities. These include cricket, chess, cross country, debating, rugby, football/soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, rowing, sailing, volleyball and basketball. Students can also compete against other schools in non-GPS sports such as Aussie Rules, Touch and Golf.
However, St Joseph’s Nudgee College is not just for those with a sporting interest as the College strives to cater for the cultural education of the boys. Major art, musical and dramatic productions are staged regularly and interested students are encouraged to develop their talents in these areas. Musicians also have the opportunity to join one of the many College concert or stage Bands while debaters can compete in both the GPS and the Queensland Debating Union (QDU) competitions. Each year a College Public Speaking contest is held and students have the opportunity to enter "Youth Speaks for Australia" and "Rostrum" competitions.
Specialty clubs cater for those with an interest in AV, cattle/rodeo, chess and board games, clay targets, multi-media, philosophy, robotics, small bore rifle, squash, surfing, and weight lifting.
The philosophy of St Joseph’s Nudgee College is to establish a welcoming atmosphere for every student. A sense of belonging follows, creating a sense of security and acceptance. Boys are known by name; they are acknowledged and respected simply because they are members of the school community.
All students and academic staff are welcomed into one of nine Houses under the administration of a House Dean. There are approximately 170 boys in each house, from Years 5 through to Year 12 at St Joseph’s Nudgee College. Together they compete in intra-school sports and participate in fundraising and other social activities as a unique group.
This system ensures boys from all Year levels mix regularly, within a small group of approximately 20, helping to establish a relationship of trust, support and friendship. Students stay with the same Pastoral Care (PC) group, PC teacher and House Dean for the duration of their time at St Joseph’s Nudgee College, to ensure a sense of belonging. Your son’s PC Tutor is the first and central link to many College activities, events and communications.
House Tutor group meetings are held every morning and Student Formation classes once a week. Student Formation classes teach students at St Joseph’s Nudgee College about being ‘connected’, and cover six areas in the curriculum which are considered essential to the developmental needs of boys.
In addition, House Tutor groups follow four main themes: Community Living; Relationships and Gender; Social Justice; and Physical and Emotional Health. The seven core values of Edmund Rice Education are critical in the development of the student and are included in the Nudgee program to enhance discussion and reflection during House Tutor groups, whole school, year level and house assemblies.
St Joseph’s Nudgee College has a wide range of subjects available across both its Junior, Middle and Senior schools that allow the boys to gain knowledge and experience in whatever field they wish to pursue upon graduation. Whether its drama, music, science, sports, languages, art, mathematics, computers or industrial skills, St Joseph’s Nudgee College caters for all interests. St Joseph’s Nudgee College also caters to those with particular interests in Agricultural Studies, Marine Studies and Hospitality with classes in these areas for Senior students. Certificate courses, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships are also available.
In addition, the St Joseph’s Nudgee College Enrichment area aims to cater for the needs of our gifted and talented boys. Enrichment encompasses school subjects, programs and extra-curricular activities and allows boys who show a specific talent for a subject area, or in general, to be given greater challenges in order for them to reach their potential. Enrichment Week, Year 10 Enrichment Expo, Days of Excellence, Griffith University Excellence Expo and the National Invention Convention all provide opportunities for gifted and talented students to display their work.
