Melbourne Montessori School - Caulfield Campus

Welcome to Melbourne Montessori School

Melbourne Montessori School (MMS) is an independent primary school for children from 3 to 12 years of age. There are two campuses, one in South Caulfield and the other in East Brighton. Each has outdoor play space with interesting structures, and classrooms equipped with Montessori materials. These environments are prepared for children at each developmental level, and allow children to take responsibility for their own education. As a result our students develop a life-long passion for learning.

A Montessori education will give your child:

the opportunity to work at their own pace in a non-competitive environment;
the opportunity to follow their natural curiosity;
systematic steps in learning, from the concrete to the abstract;
and an environment of stability, respect, order and beauty.

All classes are multi-age, giving each child the opportunity to learn from others and the flexibility to develop their personality at their own pace, both socially and intellectually. Children usually stay with the same teacher for three years, and this leads to strong teacher-student bonds and a deep understanding by the teacher of individual student characteristics.

At every age level students participate in a range of specialist activities. These include Italian, Music, Art, Drama and Sport.

Parent and Toddler

This program is to cater for our youngest students and is a gentle introduction to Montessori education and practices where a parent or caregiver attends the session with the child. Each session is for 2 hours, from 9:30 - 11:30. The children work with a Montessori coordinator and parents learn to guide their child's work in keeping with Montessori philosophy. This program offers parents an opportunity to learn about Montessori education and to engage with other parents on other issues of parenting through discussion and sharing of ideas.
Currently sessions are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Most people enrol for one session per week, but it is also possible to enrol in multiple sessions if places are available.

Early Learners Program

The Melbourne Montessori Early Learners Program recognises that the first three years of life are fundamental in the development of human beings and their potential. The child’s physical development is phenomenal and apparent and inspires our care and attention. Yet a profound and less obvious development is taking place within the child. Maria Montessori refers to development in this period as the spiritual embryo. She believed that a second embryonic period occurred after birth, during the first three years of life, when the child’s intelligence is formed. This is the time the child acquires the culture and language into which he or she is born. It is the period when the core of personality, social being and the essence of spiritual life are developed. Our Montessori teachers in this area of the school are trained to understand the child’s development and the development of the human mind, which allows them to prepare the learning environment to meet the needs of the child.

Materials are set out in an ordered manner on low, open shelves. All activities aim to foster independence, support psycho-motor development and language acquisition.

Cycle 1 (Ages 3 to 6)
