St Helena Secondary College is a co-educational state secondary school of approximately 1500 students. It is located in leafy Eltham North in Melbourne’s outer north-eastern suburbs. St Helena is a nationally recognised high demand school, a reflection of the esteem in which it is held by the wider community.
The College is a vibrant learning institution with a progressive attitude to change. Our commitment to building teacher capacity has paved the way for revising curriculum, incorporating information technology and higher order thinking skills and the Northern Region's Powerful Learning Strategy. St Helena is warm and friendly with traditional values of respect, responsibility and personal best. It has one of the most extensive extra-curricular programs possible with musical bands, arts, performance and sporting opportunities.
Our students enjoy a pleasant physical environment with state-of-the-art facilities and landscaped grounds. The College is well resourced with a VCE Centre, a Junior School complex, fully equipped Food Technology, Woodworking and Automotive Studies areas, a Performing Arts Centre, Gymnasium and Fitness Centre, an Open Learning Centre and a Canteen. St Helena is moving towards sustainability and a reduced carbon footprint.
Parents are consistently positive and our students are motivated and independent. Collectively they show a high level of respect for their teachers, the College and for themselves. We live our motto Dare to be Excellent.
St Helena aims to improve literacy, numeracy and VCE outcomes for all students through continually examining and improving our teaching practice.
St Helena Secondary College offers an organised and ordered learning environment and promises to support students in their right to learn and their right to safety. St Helena provides a varied curriculum based on six periods per day and five day weeks. Electives which complement core subjects are offered to Middle School students and those undertaking the VCE are provided with a wide choice of options. Year 12 graduates have consistently improved their performance during the past five years and, in 2011, 95% of those who applied for further studies through VTAC were successful.
Our support of Middle and Senior School students through a Careers and Pathways Program is comprehensive and aims to cater for all pathway choices and our Year 9 Program is enhanced by a large range of elective offerings and an enquiry based learning program The Global Village.
We offer an Acceleration and Enrichment Program at Years 7-10. Many students undertake a Year 12 subject in Year 11 and most Year 10 students study at least one Year 11 subject. Some also undertake University extension subjects and an extensive range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects. The College enjoys consistently high VCE pass rates and ATAR scores.
Students at St Helena's Secondary College are encouraged to grow and develop through a range of extra-curricular opportunities including College Leadership positions, the annual Musical Production, College Play, Rock Eisteddfod, Peer Support Programs, The Outer Edge (Year 9 CFA/Duke of Edinburgh Program), interschool sport, debating and more.
