Welcome

Blackheath & Thornburgh College (BTC) is an independent, co-educational, non-denominational College catering for day and boarding students from Kindy to Year 12.

For over 100 years BTC has been providing education and opportunities for students from across regional and remote areas of QLD. Generations of students, parents and staff have enjoyed the advantages of a quality academic and co-curricular programme in our structured and supportive environment.

And our BTC parents appreciate the friendly, family atmosphere that is experienced throughout our co-educational campus and can be confident that their children, whether day or boarding students, have access to high quality educational and co-curricular opportunities.

Our Campus

The College is located on approximately 10 hectares in the centre of Charters Towers, providing a broad curriculum and great facilities in a safe, rural location just 135km from the city of Townsville.

BTC is as much a second home as an educational place of learning and we see ourselves as all part of one extended family. We are a strongly-connected community of passionate staff and enthusiastic, sociable students all within an atmosphere that promotes a community, supportive spirit.

With just over 300 students including 130+ boarders, the College team places a high value on knowing their students and how they learn. With a diverse student population coming from across Australia and the Pacific, students are encouraged to understand the beauty this diversity brings to their lives as young people preparing for an ever-changing world.

Learning at Our College

PRE-PREP TO YEAR 6
Our Pre-Prep class focuses on establishing vital foundations so your child receives the best possible start to their education. This environment is a place where children feel loved, accepted and secure and so feel confident to grow, express themselves and develop their abilities.
THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
The Junior School provides a stimulating learning environment with small numbers of students in each classroom, giving all students access to personalised learning. Our programs provide opportunities to apply learning across real problems, open investigations and enrichment activities, so students gain a deep understanding, fluency of skills and applications of mathematics.
SENIOR SCHOOL – YEAR 7 TO YEAR12
Our Senior School is a dynamic and energetic environment with strong and trusted connections between students, their teachers and the wider community.
Our broad learning environment provides for and promotes the spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical development of every student and provides a range of flexible pathways to cater for a student’s individual needs and interests, offering an excellent programme of academic, vocational, sporting, cultural and social opportunities and experiences for every student.

The Arts

Students have the opportunity to be involved in the College’s Arts Programme. This includes Visual Art, Drama and Music.

Students enrolled in the BTC Instrumental Music program to have the opportunity to learn a number of musical instruments and to become involved in school ensembles such as the Swing Band, Concert Band, Guitar Ensemble and Choir, as their skill permits.

We also have an enviable reputation in the area of Debating and Public Speaking. Junior and Senior Debating teams compete against other Charters Towers Schools in regular debates.

Sport

Sport at BTC is a central feature of student life and many life skills including teamwork, co-operation, sportsmanship and the striving for success are gained from an involvement in sporting activity.
We have a wide range of sports on offer and our passionate, experienced teachers organise training sessions, team practice and wider competitions within an inclusive and supportive structure.
Students have the opportunity to participate in local club sports including: Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Touch Football, Golf and Basketball, and opportunities exist for students to gain selection in district, regional and state teams.

Boarding - A home away from home

We have a long and proud history of welcoming international students to our community and the contribution they have made to our College since 1919.
Our staff understand the huge sacrifices made by families in sending their children away to boarding school. Our boarding team has worked to develop communication pathways and opportunities to connect with parents alongside initiatives to promote a healthy and positive environment for their boarding communities.
Students have access to high quality nutrition, comfortable living conditions and a range of active opportunities to keep the blood pumping and minds moving. ?And whether it is volunteering with the local cricket club to prepare fields and facilities, supporting our P&F ladies in the canteen at the sale yards, assisting behind the scenes at the local eisteddfod or lending a hand for the annual show our boarders have regular opportunities to actively engage with the community.

We welcome enquiries from overseas parents looking to provide their child with a quality Australian boarding education.
