Excellent Education with Faith as a Foundation

St John’s is a co-educational College founded on faith in Jesus Christ and our Catholic identity. All staff have the privilege of communicating the values of the Gospels and the Catholic tradition through their teaching and relationships with students and each other. Opportunities for prayer and celebration of the liturgy, supported by the priests of the region, are integrated into College life.
A good education is so much more than just academic achievement. We take this important distinction seriously. Within our ‘walls’ we work with parents, our students and the community to provide the most suitable educational path for each person. This also means meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs that will lead eventually to the well balanced and well rounded young men and women who walk out of our gates and into the world outside.

The wonderful campus that is St John’s today is a testament to the faith and hard work of many founding clergy, religious and parents and it has been developed by dedicated staff who continue the tradition of service to the young men and women of the area.
St John's has a rich history in serving Catholic education in this region. As the first Catholic co-educational Regional College in Victoria, St John’s has and continues to serve the parishes of St Mary's, Dandenong; Holy Family, Doveton; St Paul Apostle, Endeavour Hills; St Kevin's, Hampton Park and St Anthony's, Noble Park
Today we continue to embrace and celebrate the diversity of cultures of students entering the school, enriching our school community and reflecting the growing multi-cultural community.

Student Wellbeing

St John’s is a safe environment where all students are cared for in their educational, spiritual, social and emotional needs.
All members of the school community have certain responsibilities and rights; the right to be treated as equal and valued individuals with their personal growth unhindered by discriminatory or anti-social behaviour.
As a Catholic community we also, when someone has made a mistake, work towards restoration. We work towards healing and forgiveness and justice.
Our counselling services support the entire school community. We have trained psychologists who are able to assist with a range of issues which are faced by members of our community.

Caring and Sharing

Specially tailored programs begin on the first day that a child arrives at St John’s, so all of our Year 7 students are involved in a comprehensive Transition Program that provides a firm foundation for secondary education.
There are many programs and structures within the College which together ensure that every child is known and supported. In addition to formal school structures, such as our House system, the Buddy System within a vertical home room structure develops confidence and self esteem through friendships between Year 7 and Year 10 students. The bonds established during the program benefit both junior and senior students in their experience of friendship and leadership.

Community

St John’s community is one in which learning, personal responsibility and growth to Christian maturity are valued and nurtured.
We have a committed and talented staff. Their expertise and dedication are essential to the sense of community that is fostered here at St John’s. All of our staff actively support the Catholic ethos throughout their teaching and example.
St John’s aims to be a community in which learning, self discipline, responsibility and connectedness are fostered, valued and encouraged. It is through this sense of connectedness to our community that students grow and mature into productive, valuable members of the wider community.
Central to our student wellbeing structure is our House System. Through it we strive to ensure that every student is known and supported through a relationship with significant adults and a supportive group of peers. Within the House system, students have the opportunity to experience leadership and loyalty within a small cohesive community.

Learning

Our fundamental purpose as a school is that of learning. All that we do supports the development of a learning community of students and teachers. We continuously review and reform our teaching and learning philosophy and practice.
St John’s prides itself on the fact that every student is given the opportunity to reach their own full academic potential. The strengths and individual motivations of each student means working with them, and their parents, to determine the best and most appropriate learning opportunities and outcomes.

St John’s has been very active for some years in the provision of opportunities for students whose preference for learning is practical and applied to real situations. We have well established applied learning programs which allow students to undertake Vocational Education and TAFE certification in several areas.
A fully operating commercial restaurant within the College campus, Graduates’ Restaurant provides a real workplace for students of Hospitality. The restaurant has won three National Awards from Tourism and Hospitality Training Australia and is open to the public.
Apart from the applied learning opportunities for St John’s students we continue to provide and strive for excellence in all academic pursuits. Our VCE results in the past few years have seen St John’s students achieve VCE Premier’s Awards and maintain high student numbers in the top ENTER/ATAR range.
Within St John’s operates a campus of St Mary's College for Hearing Impaired Students. Students of St Mary’s are supported in classes with St John’s students.

Activity

From Student Leadership to Orchestra, Sporting Teams to Theatre Sports, Public Speaking to Community Service, co-curricular activities provide the means for students to indulge a passion, try a new skill, learn and develop leadership, social and organisational skills, as well as providing service to the College and the community.
At St John’s our co-curricular activities provide valuable learning experiences involving teamwork, sportsmanship and personal excellence. We are fortunate that our staff give generously of their time to supplement academic programs with challenging and exciting co-curricular opportunities.
