CULTURE AND COMMUNITY
The Hutchins School is an Anglican day and boarding school for boys from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 all on one campus. Established in 1846, Hutchins has a long tradition of developing character in boys with a firm focus on their wellbeing. As a community, we aspire to be people of integrity who act with humility, kindness, courage and respect. Our highly skilled staff are committed to the holistic development of each student within a nurturing environment where students are challenged to be the best they can be.
Our long and proud history of academic achievement is complemented by a diverse co-curricular program that features comprehensive sport, performing arts and service programs. The opportunities available for students to discover their passion, broaden their experience and embrace challenge are extensive and are designed to equip students with the essential skills that will serve them for life.
PASTORAL CARE
Mentor groups serve as an opportunity for a smaller, vertical grouping of students from Years 9-12, enabling them to know one another under the guidance and direction of a mentor. Mentors within the Senior School are responsible for overseeing the total wellbeing of their students and for being aware of all aspects of the boy’s school life. The mentor’s role includes ensuring that each student feels safe, known and connected to the School community so that their potential may be reached. As such, the mentor is often the first port of call for a teacher or parent/carer.
Hutchins is divided into three mini-schools:
• Junior School is for students aged 3 to 11: Pre-Kindergarten to Year 5
• Middle School is for students aged 11 to 14: Years 6-8
• Senior School is for students aged 14 to 18: Years 9-12
POWER OF 9
Year 9 is an exciting year at Hutchins as students are welcomed into the Senior School through the Power of 9 program. It is the view of Hutchins that students should be challenged and extended, offered success in worthwhile learning activities and be given the opportunity to take responsibility for their journey.
The Power of 9 is designed to develop in students a stronger sense of purpose. This course is undertaken in two parts: the Challenge, undertaken for one term and the subjects undertaken for three terms.
The Challenge require students to study at the Marieville Esplanade campus and tests students academically, physically, socially and cognitively. Students are given the opportunity to engage in controlled risk taking and to learn more about working effectively as part of a team, which involves a two-week journey of exploration and discovery in either Tasmania, interstate or internationally.
The Power of 9 program has become one of the flagships of our educational offering.
ACADEMIC CURRICULUM
Learning at The Hutchins School is about providing opportunities for students to discover their passions. Our learning philosophy is based on the principle that we value and celebrate the individuality of each student. Learning programs are structured to guide the students in the development of their values, knowledge, understanding and skills, and to prepare them for experiences beyond the classroom. At Hutchins we aim to provide an inspirational education where each student strives to achieve their best and is willing to serve their community as an informed and active citizen.
PERFORMANCE, ARTS AND DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
Hutchins offers a comprehensive music program for all students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12. We seek to be both inclusive and exclusive, providing opportunities for all our students to engage with music, while also catering for students who have decided to make the study of music a specialty. From Years 8–12 students can choose from a wide range of elective music courses, including those that allow students to pursue music as an area of interest through to senior level courses offered in conjunction with the University of Tasmania.
Hutchins offers a dynamic range of activities and performance opportunities for students in our curriculum and co-curricular studies, including participating in major productions, eisteddfods and a dance program. The dance program currently comprises of 150 students learning jazz, musical theatre, hip hop, contemporary and tap dancing.
Extensive and fully equipped workshops for design in wood and metal are features of the Design and Technology Faculty. Architecture, electronics and computer-aided design, animation and robotics have designated learning and practical areas with leading edge design applications and equipment in use.
BOARDING AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Established in 1846, Hutchins is one of Australia’s oldest schools, with a reputation for excellence in educating boys and an outstanding academic record. Boarding provides an opportunity for boys to be mentored and supported in a caring environment as they embark on their Hutchins journey.
Burbury House, Hutchins residential community, aims to develop boarding students both academically and personally into informed and active citizens in a family environment. With a focus on individual wellbeing, these experiences are shared through the friendships boarders build, many of which will last a lifetime.
Burbury House offers students collaborative and individual spaces, attractively furnished rooms, bathrooms and welcoming leisure areas; including a theatre room, games room, kitchen, music and breakout rooms. Boarders have access to the School’s sporting facilities, gymnasium, weights room. Boarders can also participate in a wide range of weekend and school holiday activities, with many opportunities to enjoy Tasmania’s spectacular scenery and waterways.
